Roadside Rural
Field of Reflection
Mother Nature put on a colorful show last evening (6/29/2017). I was traveling north on Hwy 281 just north of Doniphan, NE, and pulled off onto a gravel road to try to catch a quick several shots before the colors faded. Thankfully I found this pool of water at the end of a cornfield to add an extra element of interest.
This is looking south toward Doniphan. The white spec on the horizon in the middle of the photo is Doniphan's elevated water tank.
Tommy Boy
Heading home from the Loess Hills, I spied this tom turkey trying his best to impress his harem. They didn't seem to be very interested, but that didn't dampen his enthusiasm.
Terraced
Iowa's Loess Hills are heavily terraced to allow farming with minimal soil erosion. The depth and texture of the landscape makes for some very interesting landscape photo opportunities.
Nature's Yard Light
The Miniature Grain Elevator
This is another photograph from south of Hastings, NE. By the time I had driven to a location where there was some kind of compelling foreground element (the grain elevator), the most dramatic clouds had broken up. Regardless, I think this shot is worth sharing.
Alien Clouds
Driving toward Hastings, NE, from the south on the evening of July 5th provided a spectacular formation of clouds. If you don't stop, you won't get the picture...so I stopped, and am glad I did.
Snowy Rawhide Creek
This morning (12/1/2015) I hit the back roads looking for some interesting scenery created by yesterday's snow. I found this scene before clouds moved in for the rest of the day. This is a picture of Rawhide Creek just before its confluence with the Elkhorn River.
Mottled Dusk
This was taken from a dead-end road and looking across Blair High Road, which is one of the reasons very little foreground is seen - there's nothing very attractive about seeing a 4 lane highway. The main points of interest were the sun and clouds anyway, but a little horizon helps provide some degree of scale for this image. It would have been better though to have found a tree or barn or something more identifiable to provide scale for this shot, but sometimes you just have to make do with what's there. (9/06/2015)
Near Harvest Sun
As soon as I heard the forecast for thunderstorms this evening, I went exploring for some potentially interesting rural landscapes north of Omaha. This time of year extending into Fall, with the row crops providing interesting texture to the landscape, provides greater potential for interesting compositions/scenes. (9/06/2015)
Fire in the Sky
A beautiful display of nature's color one evening. This was shot just west and north of Bennington, Nebraska.
Dari Barn Lineup
While driving Highway 6 through Grinnell, IA, one afternoon heading home from a conference, I came across this iconic small town scene. I love the row of tractors facing the row of people all lined up at the local Dari Barn. A piece of Americana if you ask me...
Minimum Maintenance
When I see a sign warning of a road's "minimum maintenance", I have to check it out. Not much road maintenance here...
The Windmill and the Tree
While driving around, I came across this somewhat iconic rural scene. No cranes, just rural Nebraska scenery.
An old "wilted" windmill stands alone along the route between Auburn and Nebraska City in southeast Nebraska. I almost didn't stop to shoot the scene, but am glad I did (except for the dozen or so chigger bites I experienced). This is one of several different angles and compositions attempted. For Sal
"For Sal" - - Shot in Rogers, NE.
In November of 2011 I went on a hunting trip north of Burwell, NE. It is beautiful country in it's own unique way - sandhills, grassland, golden colors, peace. To me, this shot captures the general nature of this area. This was shot in the late afternoon during the "golden hour".
